Spearmint (Mentha spicata) is probably the most well-known type of mint. Its name is derived from the name of a nymph who was transformed into a plant by the jealous Proserpina. Even as far back as ancient times, mint was used as a medicinal and culinary plant. It is said to have antispasmodic, calming and pain-relieving effects.
In a culinary setting, mint is used in a wide variety of ways, such as in teas, for seasoning sauces and for garnishing dishes. Its rich flavour makes it the perfect finishing touch for salad, meat dishes, drinks or desserts .
Mint is used in numerous industrial products including toothpaste, chewing gum and sweets.
