Mizuna (Brassica japonica), also known as spider mustard or Japanese mustard greens, is a leafy green from Asia. Its subtle sharpness means that mizuna lives up to its name, which translates as “water greens”. Due to its antibiotic effects, mizuna was used as a medicinal plant and to help prevent colds in ancient China.
At our latitudes, the young, serrated leaves with white stems are primarily used as a salad ingredient. However, mizuna can also be consumed as a steamed vegetable. It is used in the famous Japanese one-pot dish “sukiyaki”.
Mizuna should be stored at fridge temperature and consumed quickly.
